"They" will resort to coercion, repression, mistreatment, torture, or even worse, because, as everybody knows, violence solves nothing, but it contributes massively to it.
At least, that's what “They” think when it comes to defending supposedly superior interests.
Superior in what way? Superior for whom?
Everyone is defending their own interests!
A bacterium defends its interests when it does everything it can to survive, just like a microscopic fungus or yeast.
All creatures in the universe defend their interests when it comes to living or surviving!

No interest is superior nor inferior to another.

For an individual as for a community, everything that serves your interests is perceived as "Good" and everything that does not serve your interests is perceived as "Evil".
You really need to think about freeing yourselves from these binary, I should even say bipolar, considerations. You're not children anymore.
By refusing their system – which they impose on you with incredible violence – "they" will present you to others as "Evil", the Devil, Satan or some other BULLSHIT, as long as you fall for it, that's all "They" want.
"They" are making fun of you, and "They" are doing it masterfully.
This gives you an idea of their (quite high) level of sadism and perversion...
Contrary to popular belief, it is not love that makes you blind, it is money, greed and all the thirsts it engenders in its fatal wake.

Money did not exist in those days.
How did people manage to live without money?
Have you thought about it for even a single moment? And why not?
Another world is possible: it is because we are conditioned from birth to submit to the system – which is also imposed on us with violence and constraint – that we no longer know how to think other than through the deleterious filter of money.
